Field Trip to Cuyahoga Valley NP

Beautiful weather and local geology conspired to bring out nearly 100 students to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park on Sunday April 15. Students from the Stark Campus in Dr. Carrie Schweitzer’s Earth History class and the Kent Campus in Dr. Rod Feldmann’s Earth History class and the Earth History Laboratory sections run by Adina and Ovidiu Franţescu and Cristina Robins enjoyed the trip.Students examined weathering of headstones, stream erosion, and rock types and formation of ledges in the park. For many, it was their first trip and a great introduction to our National Park!  See other Field Trips offered in undergraduate classes in Geology.

    Mississippian-Pennslyvania Strata of West Virginia

The students in the Department of Geology's upper division Sedimentology and Stratigraphy class had the opportunity to put what they learned in the classroom to practical use this weekend. With spectacular weather - and about one third of our majors in tow - Dr. Ortiz headed down to wild and wonderful West Virginia with his students to travel back in time and study geologic formations laid down under shallow marine and coastal conditions about 350 to 300 million years ago during the transition from the Mississippian to the Pennsylvanian Periods. Mississippian-Pennslyvania Strata of West Virginia

Students had the opportunity to integrate what they learned in Earth Materials, Invertebrate Paleontology and Structural Geology as they identified geologic formations, found fossil plants and animals and study erosive formation boundaries between sedimentary strata generated by the tectonic forces of continental collision. Paleontology Field Trip

With beautiful April weather, Professors Rod Feldmann and Carrie Schweitzer lead paleontology students to Caesar Creek (Ordovician), Oakes Quarry (Silurian), and East Quarry (Devonian) to collect fossil specimens and map quadrats.  See other Field Trips offered in undergraduate classes in Geology.

Department of Geology

The Department of Geology at Kent State University offers four-year programs leading to the Bachelor of Science, B.S. Environmental Geology Concentration and Bachelor of Arts degrees in Geology as well as the Bachelor of Arts in Earth Science. Students can also pursue graduate study leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Geology. The atmosphere within the department is personalized and informal with major emphasis placed on teaching as well as on research. Most undergraduate major classes are small (10-30 students). Close faculty-student relationships are established by participation in various field trips and several annual student-faculty social events, including the fall picnic and the spring banquet.

Colloquium is held Fridays at 2:15 pm in room 234 McGilvrey Hall. Click here for our current schedule.
